John Fante

John Fante nasceu em 1909, em Denver, Colorado, EUA. Começou a escrever aos 20 anos, quando foi viver para Los Angeles, e publicou o primeiro conto em 1932. Em 1938, saiu o seu romance de estreia, A primavera há-de chegar, Bandini, inaugurando a saga de Arturo Bandini. Publicou vários outros romances e novelas, tendo também escrito numerosos guiões para cinema.

Atingido pela diabetes em 1955, a doença acabou por levá-lo à cegueira e à amputação das pernas. John Fante morreu em 1983, aos 74 anos. Recebeu postumamente, em 1987, o Prémio Lifetime Achievement, atribuído pelo PEN, e é hoje reconhecido como um dos grandes autores da sua geração, precursos de outros vultos literários.
