Viajou durante dez anos pelos diversos estados da China para convencer os governantes a adotarem os seus princípios. Quando percebeu que as suas ideias não encontrariam espaço entre os senhores feudais, voltou para Lu, a sua terra natal, e passou o resto da vida a dedicar-se ao que melhor fazia: ensinar.
