Haruki Murakami é um dos escritores japoneses contemporâneos mais divulgados em todo o mundo sendo, simultaneamente, aplaudido pela crítica, que o considera um dos «grandes romancistas vivos» (The Guardian) e a «mais peculiar e sedutora voz da moderna ficção» (Los Angeles Times).
Nasceu em Quioto, em 1949. Estudou teatro grego antes de gerir um bar de jazz em Tóquio, entre 1974 e 1981. Além de Sputnik, Meu Amor, Kafka à Beira-Mar, Dance, Dance, Dance e A Wild Sheep Chase, que recebeu o Prémio Noma destinado a novos escritores, Murakami é ainda autor, entre outros, de Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World (distinguido com o prestigiado Prémio Tanizaki) e, mais recentemente, de Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman, a sua terceira coletânea de contos, distinguida com o Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award.
