George Orwell

George Orwell (1903–1950), pseudónimo de Eric Arthur Blair, nasceu na Índia e frequentou o prestigiado colégio interno inglês de Eton. Combateu ao lado dos republicanos na Guerra Civil Espanhola e, durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, serviu a organização britânica Home Guard e trabalhou para a BBC. Tornou-se colaborador do Tribune e, mais tarde, correspondente de guerra do Observer. A par com a sua produção jornalística, Orwell dedicou-se ao ensaio, à poesia e à ficção. A alegoria política A Quinta dos Animais, publicada em 1945 e, um ano mais tarde, a distopia 1984 abriram caminho para a fama internacional de Orwell, uma das figuras mais destacadas e influentes da literatura do século XX.
