Margaret Atwood
Margaret Atwood nasceu a 18 de Novembro de 1939, em Otava, no Canadá. Passou grande parte da sua vida no Norte de Ontário e no Quebeque, acompanhando com frequência o pai, entomologista, em incursões nas florestas da região. Começou a escrever aos seis anos, tendo decidido tornar-se escritora aos dezasseis. Em 1957, iniciou estudos no Victoria College da Universidade de Toronto, onde publicou poemas e artigos na revista Acta Victoriana e foi aluna do crítico Northrop Frye. Formou-se em 1961 em Artes. Foi nesse ano que o seu livro de poemas Double Persephone recebeu a Medalha E. J. Pratt. Posteriormente, estudou e ensinou em diversas universidades. É hoje uma romancista, contista e poeta tão reconhecida como a sua amiga e vizinha Alice Munro. Publicou mais de quarenta livros de ficção, poesia e ensaios críticos. Os seus romances incluem A História de Uma Serva, Olho de Gato, Chamavam-Lhe Grace e O Assassino Cego, que venceu o Booker Prize em 2000. Os seus livros estão traduzidos em dezenas de línguas. Recebeu diversos prémios, entre os quais o Author of the Year, atribuído pelo Sunday Times, em 1993, o Arthur C. Clarke Award for Science Fiction em 1987 e o Príncipe das Astúrias para Literatura. Foi seis vezes finalista do Booker Prize e recebeu duas vezes o Governor General’s Award. É uma das fundadoras do Writers’ Trust of Canada, organização literária que apoia e promove escritores canadianos, que conhecem alguma dificuldade em afirmar-se, espartilhados como estão entre duas importantes literaturas, a inglesa e a norte-americana. Margaret Atwood vive actualmente em Toronto.
