Nos seus livros anteriores incluem-se The Excellent Doctor Blackwell: The Life of the First Woman Physician e Hannah Riddell: An Englishwoman in Japan. Viúva de um ex-diplomata, morou na Alemanha de 1977 a 1981. Atualmente, vive em Londres.
